Those of us who live in California, especially Los Angeles, are terribly, terribly spoiled. We are swathed daily in the “sun-kissed mist” wistfully crooned about by Al Jolson. LA is an education. LA, with its rich mixtures and its specific configuration of racial tensions and pleasures, is where the rest of the country is headed. You've nailed "tolerance"--but let's think of it as one step along the way.
